This publication presents Group Material’s AIDS timeline created for their 1989 exhibition of the same name at the University of Berkeley Art Museum. In the authors’ words, “the project is an attempt to chronologically trace the development of the AIDS crisis in the United States and contextualize its development socially and politically.” The extensive, curated timeline spans a decade from 1979 to 1989. Although presented in a linear fashion, Group Material weaves these events together, creating a web that reveals how crisis is interconnected in political and social processes.
Group Material included Doug Ashford, Julie Ault, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, and Jaren Ramspacher.
